Custom Jewelry Sampling: A Practical Approval Process
A step-by-step explanation of how custom jewelry sampling turns an idea, sketch or reference into an approved production piece.
Sampling connects design intent with manufacturing reality. Whether a project begins with a sketch, a reference image or an existing sample, the goal is the same: create an approved piece that can guide reliable production.
Translate the brief into decisions
The first stage is not just copying a reference. It is identifying the decisions behind it: stone shape and size, metal choice, proportions, setting style, intended retail position and any branding details. A CAD review is useful because it makes those choices visible before material is committed.
Review the design in context
When a CAD or digital rendering is reviewed, consider the side view, stone height, balance of the band, spacing of side stones and how the design fits the rest of the collection. Small changes at this stage are easier than changes after a finished sample is made.
Use the finished sample as a production reference
The finished sample should be inspected for appearance, comfort, setting details, metal finish, dimensions and any branded elements. It is also a good opportunity to test product photography and packaging. The final approved sample becomes the reference point for the production team and the brand.
Record approvals and revisions
A short written approval list prevents misunderstandings. It can record the final ring size, stone range, metal tone, engraving, logo placement, packaging and any acceptable variation. This document is particularly valuable when the project moves into repeat orders or additional colorways.
